Day 6
The idea for today was walk a little less to prepare for tomorrow’s longer walks - unfortunately it didn’t all go to plan…..
First of all we had our usual breakfasts before we walked all the way to the Irish Pub for 10am
With very little persuasion they put the Bournemouth/Sheffield Utd game on for us
This was me happy when we were about to take the penalty we had (quite luckily) been awarded
I wasn’t nearly so happy after Solanke slipped and missed
That was worsened as Sheffield went into a 0-2 lead
Still, at least I had beer
In fairness we did come back to draw 2-2 with a 91st minute equaliser so it did feel more like a point gained rather than 2 points dropped
We then took a walk up 5th Avenue to a Lego store
Kieren didn’t buy anything but he enjoyed himself there
Then, after stopping for a bite to eat we made our way to the Harry Potter store via a shoe shop that Joss couldn’t resist
The weather had turned nasty again with what is forecast to be the last rain that we will encounter but we were prepared with umbrellas so no real hardship
Hattie had a great time there, spent lots of money and was only disappointed by the fact that they didn’t have the slytherin quidditch jumper but from the size of her haul she didn’t do too bad
We’d walked quite a way to get here and so progress was slow coming back to the hotel
As we rounded a corner, there was another Harry Potter store
We convinced her to go in and sure enough the missing jumper was there - hurrah!!!
We finally made it to the hotel and the kids had a little rest while Joss and I had a beverage in the nearby pub
We messaged the kids to join us and we had dinner there - the girls won by finishing their pasta and their salmon whilst the boys couldn’t finish their burger and steak sandwich
It was all delicious mind
Then we had the 5 minute walk to Madison Square Garden for the second time in 24 hours, this time to watch ice hockey as the New York Rangers took on the St Louis Blues
It blows me away that in that time the whole arena can be transformed in such a stark way
We were all very excited but guess who was the MOST excited - yes it’s the one with the new foam finger
I’d rather fancied a hockey jersey but at $279 I decided on a hat and a puck instead
Before the game there was an interview given by a bloke that looked like a cross between Fred Dinage and Neil Warnock
And it was nice of them to invite Tom Allen to sing the national anthem
Within the first few seconds of the game starting someone was slammed into the side and Hattie knew she was going to like it
Rangers went 1-0 up and the crowd all stood up and started their only real chant (apart from let’s go Rangers) of the night
It really threw me but when the second goal went in, I was ready for it:
I have to say the ice hockey crowd was far more boisterous than the basketball crowd but still very tame compared to European football
The game had many stops but they filled them all with karaoke, competitions and dance offs etc so the time really flew
The only thing that caused any distress was that the Rangers went in to win 4-0 and getting up and down all the time was killing Joss’ knee 🤣
That keeps our record intact of watching the home team win in every sporting event we’ve watched whilst abroad - what lucky charms we are …
After the game it was really pouring and as only the kids had brought umbrellas this time the oldies got soaked but it didn’t dampen a very enjoyable day
